Congratulations are due to Dr Gabriella Ak, a long standing PRIDA member, who was recently recognised as one of eight international "Trailblazers in Antimicrobial Resistance" by the UK Fleming Initiative and CSIRO for her leadership in AMR action.
She is currently the acting laboratory coordinator for the clinical diagnostic lab based at Port Moresby General Hospital, PNG. She highlights the importance of mentorship, sustainable investment in health systems, and capacity building to enable better diagnostic laboratory services. As the first and only medical microbiologist trained in the Pacific Nations, she has also provided much needed and sustained leadership across the infection control and antimicrobial stewardship programs at the hospital. With the assistance of Australian aid, she was responsible for the successful design and implementation of an alcohol based hand rub production facility at PMGH that has been highly cost-effective.
